The Fight To Be Relevant

IMG_0158

I’ve learned that a part of growing up is the desire to be relevant to everything and everybody. So many times, we find ourself putting ourselves out there in vulnerability and in an effort to gain the likes and attention of other people. We seek relevance in many different ways. From appearance to social status, then from associations to groveling in the presence of someone who is already deemed relevant, its all done in desperation to be “counted.” The whole term “Keeping up with the Joneses” is derived from the idea of relevancy. It’s simply saying, “The Joneses are relevant and I desire that too.” This level of desire for relevancy, could be the root of jealousy, competition, and division…all because we want to be relevant. So many people get caught up in glamour of popularity and being the center of attention until desperation takes over. Originality has become rare and carbon copies are overflowing the streets and media. Why is it so important to be relevant? Why is it so important to be liked? Has acceptance become the new confirmation of “living?” Why is validation such a big deal? Why do we succumb to the latest social standard? Why can’t we be the standard?

Don’t get caught up in the fight to be relevant!

“So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.”
‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭5:6‬
